Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine is a medical specialty used to show the function of a body organ as well as evaluate its anatomy. Nuclear Medicine has diagnostic capabilities as well as valuable therapeutic applications. Nuclear Medicine uses very small amounts of radioactive substances, or “tracers”, that are attracted to specific organs, bones or tissues in order to diagnose or treat a specific disease.
Here at Fox Valley Internal Medicine, we perform many different types of these kinds of Nuclear Medicine studies. Nuclear Cardiac Stress Tests are preformed on site with one of our physicians and are the state-of-the-art test for evaluation of coronary artery disease. We can perform HIDA scans which detect gall bladder disease not identified by ultrasound. Bone Scans can be performed to look for stress fractures, infections or detect other bone diseases. A Bone Scan can often find a problem days to months earlier than a regular X-ray.
